Behind
cinder
and
cement
confines
we
three
scurried
down
dirt
poor
paths
Past
the wise
pine
and
the wicked
birch
we stripped
bare
late
last
spring
until
we
three
lose
our footing
and
find our way
to the sodden moss bank
where we hide
from all those witches
here
we
three
keep
company
long late afternoons
with the cat
and the cow
their gaping mouths
mewling
gurgling
filling with spring-fed
ice cold
childhood
hope
we
three
feed them
lady-slippers
and
soap leaves
the ancient forest
swells with sweet
laughter
as the summer day
yawns
in scarlet streaks
over the horizon
we
three
meandered
listlessly
back
to
the needful
hollows
Yet
many circles
around the orb
later
our Narnian bond
endures
The Cat
The Cow
and
we
three
