Yellow Skies
September 08, 20200 Comments

 Foghorns and sirens

rouse me

from dreams

dreams of long-legged lovers

and dogs

long

left

behind

the reluctant morning

skies glow

ash  and amber

like the memories

of tall trees

and dreaming

of a future

long

forgotten

Borrowed Inspiration
January 07, 2019 3 Comments

Arriving early
to start slow

breathing
tweeting
and facing the day
I cannot hide
from songs that speak my mind

I spill
a full glass
no harm done
just
leaving
an empty
sticky mess
behind

time is ticking
away

leaving late
to finish slow

breathing

I
am
still
breathing

Writing through the Winter
December 16, 20180 Comments

It is that time of year.  Short days nestled in tight darkness that sparkles with holiday lights and the reflections on the wet pavement.  Everyone rushing around like Santa's Elves to the next cheerful obligation or ugly sweater situation.

I find myself lost in the crowds, lost in thought and lost in the melancholy I have grown to expect this time of year.  Yet I have not taken poetic refuge to stave off the sullen mood that scarves my face - my words strewn about the floor like misfit toys that I trip over.

So instead I will give space to these precious little ones.  Let them play on the page.  Perhaps here they will be the good company I long for.

Please join me on my winter writing adventures

An exploration of all that is authentic by acknowledging three simple realities:

nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect

Moleskine
October 04, 2015 2 Comments

It has been a long time

I have not wanted to face
the honesty
the bleakness
the harshness
the reality

that becomes undeniable
once stroked

that space
between the lines

at last...

the wine flows
lush and long
ribbons
warming words
like velvet

9th Step
October 03, 2015 2 Comments

I am alone
except for those
that run
hot and cold
circles
around me

A howling maelstrom
whips wild
long brown hair and intentions
like an afterthought
onto the sidewalk

oh sweet friend
all blush and coy
you pull my truth
out like a splinter

I long to be free
of the fierce transfixion
but dread birthing
the jagged point
that rips both ways

My swollen lower lip
throbs
threatening
 to split
a gossamer scar
betraying
 a slip
in judgement long ago

When in the shadow of his glistening hopeful words
       I could shine no light

A decade had passed
when I received his release papers
an oblation
a curse

Forever entrapped
I must remain
burdened
blistered
in the shadow of silent amends

Binge
October 02, 20151 Comments

I hear my name
being called
in the soft static hiss
as the world
turns vague
flickering
notions
into poisonous medicine
I cannot stop
swallowing

Hours
stretch
into days
seep
into weeks
bleed
into years

The last words

I hear
my own
silence

Where did my life go?

The plasma shimmers
blissful
into
the void

Eos
October 01, 20151 Comments

Words
like clouds at dawn
cluster and fan
out and across
an endless intention

Their brilliance
glows
ripe
behind the blinds
Urging me
upwards
and out
above the sleeping city
my complacent comforts

to witness
inspiration
if only for a few moments
my blues
burn
orange

Lost and Found in Narnia
April 04, 20150 Comments

Fleeing the confines of the day, the mind
All loose and well worn
Becomes the wanderer forever
Under the hazel skies
Light drapes through branches, clinging to every willothewisp curve
As though the accidental forrest dances
Right before your eyes

By the Bayeux
April 03, 20150 Comments

It begins
Finding rhythm
in steady
beating

stitching slowly
piercing
swollen mesh

Pulling back
against the bone

Unfolding
 urges

 dew drips down
into your hands

yielding
surrenders

Crimson splashes
white hot streaks
shuddering violet

the pink
sighs

Coronal Mass Ejection
April 02, 20150 Comments

The early evening empties
with stillness
as the fog of the week rolls in from the sea

No resemblance
to the riotous gatherings
spilling out
on the sidewalk
spilt wine stains
on the pavement
the body
chalking evidence
of the balmy night before

I return here
time and time
again to the place
of a now estranged family
because it knows my bones
as the many stories
stacked neatly on the entrance table
Flirtations once swelling
crashing into the midnight hour
with slick fingers and overarching intentions
receed back
as he escapes
to his matrimony bed

Here there is no heat
Just wine
and a short walk back
to familiar walls

Mindspace
April 01, 20150 Comments
It's far
from the promised
Spacious
Southern exposure
Natural
Light filtering
Through
Blinds graciously
Left behind

Yet this moment
In the creaking
Corners I find
Comfort
Settling
For now
And call it home

Harvesting Words
March 28, 20150 Comments

The NaPoWriMo this year did not prove fruitful.  I was nervous about this creative endeavor; my abandonment of the October poetry project left deep wine colored welts on my confidence.

The only cure for this ever present sting is to write daily with the disclaimer that all works are drafts.  Readership and feedback are welcomed - Kindness most appreciated.

Off to dig and root and tug and clip as much inspiration as can be found....  I hope you join me on this adventure.

Rabbit Skin
December 02, 20140 Comments
The traveller has my rabbit skin

Velvet smooth
desire widens
sinks deep
in the gape

Craving
my indifferent fingertips
seek
the back of my neck

I shouldn’t explore this luscious terrain
on a slow Sunday afternoon
sitting alone in an empty cafe

Am I seen
as I run my fingers across
my wrists
begging loudly
for a tender grazing of teeth

so much of me
untouched for years

I have let things go
fleshfull
yet unfulfilled
by the ravishing
the knowing
of my rabbit skin

mouth and thighs
open and swell
honey pools
waiting for a precious
sucking
stamen beating
with the flick and flutter

a passing hummingbird
wants
only one taste
he did not want more

Pelted
I am left behind
cold
and wanting

Fill the long cracks

made wise waiting
for the right
direction

Decisions hang
slack
souring
in the turbid belly
of balance

It is time
to catch
a glance
a toe-hold
a break

 fall over
the fucking high note

Diapause
October 01, 2014 3 Comments

Tucked deep
inside a belief

A shell
layered with thick
pearl and pain

Bound and gagged
by all the yarns
woven

Inseparable
without boundaries
Locked-in

Here
I wait
weather
neglect
watching
unseen

Knowing

I will
survive

my darkest hour
October 21, 20121 Comments
the earth remembered me
as I unfolded
my arms above my head
the moon watched
me reach up through
warm wet soil

i held my breath close to me
the awning of branches
making way for light
to seep in

i followed the yawing path
into the blush

Unearthed
naked
I dance wild
towards dawn

Unearthing Iris
October 14, 20120 Comments

Buried
deep within
grit cake
earth
left
laid
careless hands
too eager
to cover what was

Twice overwintered
yellowed exuberant lengths
folded over itself
to wither
without even a nod

Passed
Up and Over
a warm enthusiastic evening
weighting
yawning
further into the Cimmerian keep

then one
returned to the plot
now only a whisper
of the garden
remaining
but he knows
eager
removes his weathered gloves

Bare fingers
scratching leaves
no trace yet, found
probing through the roots
renounced long ago

stems grasped tightly
pulled free
wildly kicking at the air
soiled underpinnings
cast aside

long sturdy roots
wrap around wrists
arms, bearing
down deeper
still seeking

hands cup under
firm arches
raising the plush
waxen bulb, swollen
secret sugar cache
Calcified knots
exposed
pinched
rolled between
thumb, forefinger
releasing the memory

the ground exhales
humid salty air
oozing up
below
the surface

a bloom remained
preserved
in your hands
then plunged
back
deep
into the softened
yielding soil

anew
