Cannot be Unseen

First
rainbow
after the summer shower

First
snowflake
caught on handknit
mitten

First
Christmas
glistening lights
giddy children rushing
the gift laden tree

Your baby sister
holding her first
baby
to her breast

Your baby sister's
olive green eyes
filling with tears
of love
as she looks
into yours
over the holiday table

Your baby sister's
fern green eyes
welling up
with tears of pride
as she watches
her baby
grown
standing on the stage
radiant

Your baby sister's
sage green eyes
smirking
as you laugh together
with the family
that unexpected
holiday visit

Your baby sister's
closed eyes
fluttering
when your hand
reaches to touch hers
as you whisper into her ear
that you love her

knowing you will never again
 see her
open
green
eyes

OctPoWriMo 2019  Day 9

“What has been seen cannot be unseen, what has been learned cannot be unknown. You cannot change the past, but you can learn from it. You can grow from it. You can be made stronger. You can use that strength to change your life, to change your future.”

C. Woolf
