Speed Dating
June 10, 2017 2 Comments

Returning to writing is like a blind date - I am nervous wondering if my words will seem overdressed or under made up.  I curse myself for agreeing to do this even though it is a speed date, only a 15 minute commitment to sit across from the screen while the cursor blinks vacantly back at me, waiting for me to say something.  My mouth is dry and my fingers feel stiff as I reach forward to make the first move, the keystroke unsteady and forced.  The cursor keeps ahead of anything I have to offer, still wanting more, ever waiting yet not contributing to the conversation.  I wish I ordered the rosé instead of ice tea and look longingly out the window towards others sitting in the cafe across the street.  I check the time, almost wanting the date to be over, the final bell to chime so that I can move on.  I really should be grateful though - my poetry date stood me up.  I waited pen in hand for over an hour.   I sat anxiously, picking at my face. I slouched towards the notebook perking up when a notion would walk by, thinking Here He Is! Finally! only to then watch as the notion went out the door.  So I am grateful to stare back at the cursor blinking at me, at least we are both at the table across from each other.  Our 15 minute timer has rung, time to move on to the next.
I would like to see you again I offer - the cursor blinks.  I feel a shiver run down my spine - I shift in my seat and uncross my legs.

The words - hot and low come forward

Perhaps next time,  let's meet at the cafe across the street.

I blink.  And nod yes.
