The Beginning
April 01, 20210 Comments

Today marks the beginning of the National Poetry Writing Month and as part of this I will be writing a poem a day for the next 30 days.

This is my perennial path

Here will be my words - unedited, sometimes rushed, often forced and just maybe, if the muse is kind, beautiful....

Join me on my poetic exploration of  all that is authentic by acknowledging three simple realities:

nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect

Coming Home - Day 31

Long Con
October 02, 2020 5 Comments

How I have settled

form melting

shapeless

no boundaries

left

to survey

Foundations

once sturdy

slide

further and further

down

beneath

cracked

calloused feet

well-trodden

a path

swirls and snares

my round-heeled ways

in ink stained

 silly putty

spackle

How I have fallen

an archangel

once

young

now

no

longer

How I ache with greed

for what once was

Stil, I grow

my personal purgatory

Still, I create

my own private Idaho

oh and how

still, I slide

into my stilletos

fuckhead

Day 2 of 31

Prompt: use grow, greed, for, path, create, young and fuckhead in a poem

Reach
May 12, 20200 Comments

Some
stiffen
like
forgotten ligaments
in this sedentary
world

Some
shorten
like
attention spans
in this digital
world

Some
stretch
like
compassion's arms
in this precious
world

Let us reach
up
out
higher

keep going

go deeper

The stars
are calling
our name

Respond
in kind
with
love

Rewrite
May 11, 2020 3 Comments

If I could
rewrite
the words

 the years

left
behind

a little girl lost

her diary
her dreams
her safety
her sunshine

how
would
I
begin
or
end

My form falters
 against concrete notions

 memories
lurk
in the back alleys
just laying in wait
like
stacked
cinderblocks
stained
with
blood

I have not forgotten
the darkness
the dank odor
of sweat and piss
the damp rot
of days
on
off
lord

I can still taste
wild teaberry
clove candy
and
royal blue
otter pops

my father's
pale green eyes
looking deep
into mine
rolling back
in his head
my grandmother pleading
my stepmother swerving
my mother
crying

these are things

a little girl lost
cannot
unsee

please don't take my sunshine away

this little girl found
her words
her voice
her strength
her choice

Every
breath
She rewrites
this life

A la rentrée
April 30, 20201 Comments

The new Normal
has settled in
The City
like the obligatory
relative
staying
 for "just a short while"

We did not have
enough
stocked up
 our cupboards
linen closets
and
patience
running
out
we
are
on
empty
though
gas prices
are down
no way to escape
this town

So we take Shelter
in
the place
of our memories
poured over
porcelain
and
silver
halide
crystals

We take refuge
in
literary
sanctuaries
shelves
bowing
in the bookcase
begging
for
more

We take comfort
in
computer
coffee shops
and
tea house
conversations
until
the
connection
falters

And
we wonder
when

this will be a distant memory
a story recounted
to those too small
to know
to remember

when
 a Littlechap
virus
got his wish

Lionel Purrs Paean
April 29, 20201 Comments

Nose to nose
you saw me
as not just
your
own
but your own
kind

Singing
opera
and
metal
down the hall
dark to dawn
your
sounds
beckon me forth

and oh how you
defy gravity
leaping
head
over
tail
straight up
and over

If only I had
your
gift
of levitation

We would float
around the parlor
in lotus position

purring
Ommmmmmmmmmm

no negativity
allowed

Now you are mine
my quarantine
constant companion
and I am yours
furever

Around the Block
April 28, 20201 Comments

It all started when...

pesky
persistent
human-happy
microbe
went
gangbusters
on
the
world

times of running
races
stuffing
unwashed hands
into gummy-bear filled bowls
while smiling
unmasked
willing
ones
got up
close
and
personal

but a distant memory

events
minuscule
and
colossal
canceled

children's birthday parties
become
cloistered car parades
Graduations Ceremonies
parent's schoolbook photos
The Tour
tabled
and my perennial quest
 postponed

only one
chase left

the one
away
from the crowned
snarling beast

So I run
around the block
feet
following
the
street
empty
center line

So I run
down the clock
feet
following
the
beat
to the
finish line

Silhouette
April 27, 20201 Comments

 Precarious
profile
life
ambles on
 an off-camber path

so much to bear
witness
to catch
and
release

Hard to find
sure footing

Consult
or
confess
my denial
while sympathetic
fools
(by trade or chance)
all rally
behind
the delusion

Youth
green
my eyes
I think
see clearly
the leaves
verdant
swaying

all the verges
details for decades
comfortably
insistently
blurred

come into sight

How many edges
do I want
to see
or
do I stay
sheltered in
my diffuse
perspective

The City's Almanac
April 26, 2020 2 Comments

Fog-laden mornings yield to glorious gale gusting sunshine and maskless meanderers
Magnolia and Cherry blossoms scatter on sidewalks,
eucalyptus stands sentinel along the Presidio paths
Rent controlled old English,
leaning rapacious towers,
shakey foundations
and International Orange
 bridging the bay
Pickled People and PRIDE
 crowds the corners
Dogs abound, murders on every street,
buffalos near the beach and wild parrots on the patrol
their cackle laugh echoing

This city is but a shadow of a withering dream - ah mon rêve
Instead I am greeted by discarded masks, unmentionables and colored chalk sidewalk drawings

All we have to offer is space in the cloud
A Honey Bear in a Chef hat stands  tag smeared by a pig (Swile)

Yet I know the patience and passion of the unrequited
While millennials insist immunity to this plague
Dirigour dressing in effortless entitlement

How I long for walks around Dunns
savage Narnian adventures
in the aching afternoons,
hoping Breed's pause persists
Mounted police
 chatter canter up
Union Street in the Sunday sun

Today’s news headline reads:
Daily Figures on SF coronavirus cases: confirmed cases up 4 percent and deaths at 22

Coronavirus prompts some residents to leave Bay Area

I still hear your voice - As always, you will be missed at our table

A wild white unicorn brees
Goodnight Moon

as a sun-scorched sleeping man curls in the boarded-up doorway
and fog horns bellow over the bay

I fear it will never be the same

The Palace pillars - glowing calx against the setting sun

A Closer Look
April 25, 20201 Comments

So often we look at the world
through milky
cataracts
lenses
blurred
insta-filtered
curb-side coffee
with a side
of entitled
of self-worth

If one is to look closer

to wipe clean
 the molded
contrition filled
cavernous cracks

There exists
amaranthine
universes

between us
around us
within us

Pandemic

poetry

shelter
in

social
distance

Main Street
and
Market

marauders

These
creatures
of
Habit

Hoard
creature
comforts
in their entitled
bloated
bowels

Gone
is
the
zooming
traffic

Now
is
the
zooming
meetings

and
Happy Hours

Stock Piling
disposable

Stocks plummeting

Bare

Bear
Market
toothless mutterings
of old women

Please

raving rants

Freedom!

Still
they
don't

Cassandra

Pachamama

Breathe

so many

Remembering The Way
April 22, 20201 Comments

Reading the first
pages
a second time
close to a decade
has passed
between the first
now faded
words
scratched the surface

sharp-pointed
intentions
penciled in
each morning
a long-standing
date
with a bare-faced
groggy
obstreperous
sometimes
loquacious
tea swilling
muze

My eyes
strain
to read
struggle
to see

greying
pale
words

reach out
to me
offering a kindness
as waters
crack open
and
flow

Have some tea
and wipe your tears

the last lines
are not an afterthought
but a long lost
lover
looking
longingly
back
at
me

I remember the spring
you painted
dozens
of
whittled white
pine
eggs
in the nest
of your darkened
room

Vibrant
saturated
sparkling
orbs

leaving
glitter
kisses
on
my hands

many years later

I hold
my fuschia
egg

my
glistening
Faberge
memories
of
you
