Glistening
sun reflections
dancing on ripples
we would make
in the cool
knowing
we were safe
together
We steered clear
of
shallow
places
where the snapping turtles
sleep
water moccasins
slither
hidden
in
swampy edges
like the thought
of losing
you
so
we
just
kept
swimming
our
endless
summer
lives
away
Remember
the games
we'd
play?
we would let out
our breath
and
drop
down
into
darkness
then chase
our
bubbles
to
the
sun's halo
bursting
the surface
with giddy gasps
Or how
the sparkling
water
would
turn
to
diamonds
in the sky?
We would run along
the squeeking sand
at Crane's beach
the gentle waves
tumbling
foam
over our feet
Look at all the dead mermaids...
I would say...
You would frown
...then turn back away
Then suddenly
you sank
you sank
Into the darkness
I searched
for you
in the challenger deep
I would have sold
my hair
to the witch
for your safe
passage
back
I swim
now
in an ocean
of our mother's tears
In the dark closet
I swim
now
in an ocean
of our mother's tears
In the dark closet
a cedar box
keeps
meerschaum
remains
In my open heart
the daughter's of the air
have placed
your light
you are forever
my sea diamond
In my open heart
the daughter's of the air
have placed
your light
you are forever
my sea diamond
